Nothing Smaller Than Full-sized Among Ford Pickup Trucks After Next Year

More Ford trucks are on the road than nearly every other automaker. One of the most popular trucks amongst full-sized models is the F150, and there is a reason for that. It has been for some time. There have been other truck models that have sold well within the past. The Ford Ranger, shortly to retire, was also a popular model for a while. The only other truck that isn’t an F series is the Sport Trac, a half truck, half SUV. The Sport Trac is also retiring this year. Only the F series will remain, as Ford is jettisoning as numerous vehicle lines as possible.

Sport Trac history no longer adequate

As of October 2010, there won’t be an additional Sport Trac made by Ford, according to the Courier-Journal. Ford is shutting down the line, as it is just not selling. The Sport Trac has a cult following, but not enough to justify continued manufacture. It was first offered in 2000, and sales were steady at about 60,000 for a few years. However, after 2005, sales kept declining. This year, less than 6,000 have been sold. Smaller trucks have actually been non-performing. Only two percent of sales for the entire car industry are for small pickup trucks. The F150 performs so much better in sales that it would cost more to keep making the Ranger and also the Sport Trac.

Ford strips the surplus

Ford, just like General Motors, is trimming away the fat. The automobile maker is getting rid of models and brands that aren’t selling. According to Automotive News, Ford is paring its offerings down to no fewer than 30 vehicles. In 2006, Ford offered 97. Ford has sold off underperforming brands such as Aston Martin, Volvo, Land Rover and Jaguar. Mercury will stop existing at the end of the year.

Lean and mean

Ford is also actively paring down its current roster. The business is making some other changes. Vehicles may also me sharing more parts in common. Take the Fiesta, which has 10 variations offered worldwide. About 65 percent of the parts of that auto are shared with other automobiles. There will not be a truck offered by Ford more small than the F150 by the end of next year, as Ford believes the turbo V6 within the new F150 will appeal to more consumers.
